A REFRESHER ON CREDITS
Each high school course is assigned a credit value based on the number of hours of instruction. One credit represents 25 hours of instruction. Most courses have a 5 credit value (eg. Social Studies 20-1), but some are half courses with a value of 3 credits. Theory of Knowledge is a 3 credit course or two half courses combined to make a value of 6 credits (i.e., Phys. Ed. 20/CALM 20 is a 3 + 3 credit course). You must get at least 50% in a course to earn your credits. Credits will also be awarded for completed modules in Career and Technology Studies.

CREDIT LOAD

GRADE 9 - Students are expected to have a full School Program.
GRADE 10 - Students are expected to carry at least 40 credits.
GRADE 11 - Students are expected to carry at least 37 credits.
GRADE 12 - Students are expected to carry sufficient credits to ensure that they will graduate with more than the minimum required credits.

Students carrying fewer credits than those outlined will be allowed to do so only with permission of their parents and agreement of the Administration.

Note: Students may, with permission, take up to two courses above their grade level. i.e. - Grade 10 student taking Biology 20 or Chemistry 20 in second semester. Students must have a final mark of at least 70% in the prerequisite course to take the higher level course outside of their grade year. Students may be removed from their higher level course in Semester 2 if they do not meet the 70% requirement.

Students living less than 2.4 km from their designated school must obtain a Bus pass directly from the

A replacement card will be issued for a fee (to be determined).

Eligible students will be issued a pass to use for the entire school year.**
TEXTBOOKS
-
The Bookstore will be open daily the last week in August for students to come and sign out their required textbooks for Semester 1. Specific days and times for the Bookstore will be posted on the Lindsay Thurber webpage. These books are to be returned to the Bookstore in January during exam week. Once the student returns all textbooks that they had signed out, they will then sign out their books for Semester 2.
-
Students can only return their own books. If a student returns a book that was not originally signed out to them, they are still responsible to either return their book or pay the replacement value of the missing book before getting any more books. Semester 2 books must be returned during exam week in June.
-
All books must be returned by the last day of the school year in which they were used.
CAREER
CENTRE
LTCHS is fortunate to have a full-time Career Advisor. Ideally, students should be signing up for appointments in Grade 9 to begin charting their paths. If a student is not sure what they will be doing after high school, it is important they begin planning for courses and scholarships to leave as many doors open as possible for when they do decide on a career path. Parents are strongly encouraged to book an appointment and come in with their child to discuss future plans. The Career Centre is located on the second floor in room 2600.
The Centre offers a host of services to our students including:
-
Assisting students to identify and explore their interests and abilities
-
Providing access to internet career-based search engines
-
Assisting students to set career goals and to plan strategies to reach them
-
Providing information on budgeting, financial assistance and scholarships for post secondary
-
Assisting students with trade/college/university applications and program research
-
Helping students identify scholarships and provide assistance with the application process if needed
-
Assisting students in applying for various government and privately sponsored travel study abroad programs such as “Encounters With Canada”
-
Making sure that high school course selection is on par with future plans for post-secondary
-
Hosting guest speakers during LT-FLEX and lunch from a variety of professions to give students specific career information
-
Providing an extensive peer tutoring program which allows students who are strong in specific subject areas the opportunity to gain volunteer experience. Students needing extra academic assistance in specific courses are able to access tutors during LT-FLEX.
-
Coordinating a “job-shadow” program which allows students to spend a “day in the life” with someone working in the occupation of their choice
